“The Great Depression: A Diary” is a firsthand account of hard times and uncertainty, written by a lawyer in Youngstown, Ohio, who struggled to keep his practice going while banks and businesses collapsed. He was not clear if the government was helping or hurting. Sound familiar?
Written by Benjamin Roth, the diary is edited by his son Daniel along with James Ledbetter, editor of The Big Money blog . The book reminds us of how different living history is from the story that gets told later, when we know the ending. For Roth, though, his bank has closed and he writes “’I have some money and checks to deposit but do not know where to go to open a checking account.” More excerpts from the diary can be seen here in a review by Justin Moyer’s in The Washington Post of the new publication.
