Should there be an XBRL professional certification?

Uncategorized Add comments

The XBRL International organization is evaluating the market potential and demand for a XBRL Certification Program for individuals, which strikes us as a good idea. Since XBRL is a standard tool for many financial reporting jobs, the certificate would be a plus for applicants.

Similar certificates exist in the financial, auditing and information technology communities, so XBRL is inviting interested parties to submit their opinions about the value of an XBRL Certification Program through this online survey.

Two levels of proficiency are being considered for certification. The foundational level courses and exams would be delivered online while the professional level might be accompanied by direct interview.

There should be a certification in XBRL – -but XBRL International should not be executing. XBRL International is not skilled or structured to support local taxonomies. They do not have relationships with the regulators that are building or mandating each local taxonomy. They would need to build a completely duplicative structure and set of skills to the local jurisdictions to make the certifications relevant. They certifications should be built and executed by XBRL.US, XBRL.China, etc and the curriculum should be approved by XBRL international .
