The official XBRL for Dummies book is now available in printed form as well as an e- version for reading on Kindle. Co-Authored by Charles Hoffman and Liv Watson, the first chapter gives an excellent, comprehensive explanation of XBRL, and the fourth chapter leads you through a primer. Both business and technical readers will get a lot of solid, practical information along with a theoretical understanding of what XBRL is all about.
The book can be ordered here. There is also an accompanying website for the book that lists links to all the many URLs mentioned in the book itself – a very convenient resource.
This official book is not to be confused with a similarly named “Dummies” book that was available for free. The Dummies title can be used by any non-profit group if it is given away for free. This new publication, however, is the official version – meaning you have to buy it.
Hoffman is credited for having and driving the idea of applying XML standards to financial reports, so the book is as authoritative as you can get. Co-author Liv Watson is another XBRL pioneer. Formerly with EDGAR Online, Watson continues to be active in developing the international XBRL community.
