Customer Spotlight: Analytical tool dives into common stock portfolios to weigh each company
Uncategorized Add commentsWe always enjoy seeing ways our customers are using our XBRL-tagged data feeds to power their products. Here’s one called, OV Tool (the OV stands for Ownership View), which lets users dive deeper into a common stock portfolio to better understand the relative value of each company.
Here’s how the OV Metrics president, Miles Jennings, Jr., describes his newest release, which can be viewed here.
“OV Metrics is a set of common stock portfolio valuation measurements based upon the actual percent owned of each company in the portfolio. By calculating the portfolio’s ownership interests in each of the common stocks held, the owner is then able to better understand the underlying financial results supporting the portfolio’s total market valuation.
The OV Tool calculates the portfolio’s actual ownership interest in each company’s sales, earnings, cash flow, and book value. Then, by adding up all of the portfolio companies’ ownership interests in the four areas of sales, earnings, cash flow and book value, the OV Tool derives valuation ratios for the companies in the portfolio.
In addition, the OV Tool displays the ownership interests in each company’s results as a percentage of the portfolio’s total ownership interests, thereby providing comparative data for further research and evaluation.
In many cases the company’s portfolio weights are far different than their respective percentage of the portfolio’s total ownership interests in sales, earnings, cash flow, and book value. The OV Tool helps to quantify those valuation risk and exposure levels as well as to reveal holdings with relatively attractive valuations. As a result, the OV Tool helps in the asset allocation process.”
