Who will be teaching who?

In the 6th Annual Investment Research Challenge of The New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) leading industry professionals teach business and finance students how to research and report on a publicly traded company.  But this year, the students will have an advantage over their mentors. The results may be more of an eye-opener for the judges than the students.

As the event’s sponsor, EDGAR Online is giving students full access to I-Metrix. This online tool, which uses real-time interactive data and performs instant, automated analysis, is something we expect future analysts will take for granted.

Today’s students grew up using the web. They come prepared to the competition already computer literate and expecting access to comprehensive and real-time data. They are likely to take for granted the powerful new research and analysis capabilities they will be using.

The NYSSA challenge spans eight months during which the students will receive training on research, report writing, and ethics. All student teams will analyze the same company, W. P. Carey & Co. LLC (NYSE: WPC), a leading global investment manager and provider of long-term net lease financing. They will also be able to interview company management.  Based on their reports, four teams will be selected to present their findings to a panel of respected Wall Street experts. The winning team will go onto the Global Finals, where we will see if their international competitors have also used open-standard, XBRL technology for their research and analysis.

Participating universities are Baruch College of CUNY, Columbia University, Fordham University, Hofstra University, New York University, Pace University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University and St. John’s University.
